Rappelling sets canyoneering and canyoning apart from just a really intense hike. Super fun, but extremely dangerous if done wrong. A few mistakes anyone could make rappelling include rapping of the end of the rope, relying on inadequate gear or anchors, clipping into the wrong side of a single strand rappel, and on and on. I will not be discussing everything that could go wrong rappelling in this article.
For your first-time rappelling go to a local rock climbing gym. Many offer classes or at least an instructor who can teach you the ropes. This is good to learn in a controlled environment. Reading and knowing the basics first never hurt anyone!
Before setting up your anchor, especially if it is near the edge, use your daisy chain, or sling to clip into the anchor.
